Drawing is not only the foundation for creating painting, but captures the emotional fluctuations during the process of inspiration. The light, versatile nature of the art form allows for space for improvisation and spontaneity.
Kentridge continues to approach drawing both as a vehicle for brainstorming and a means of creative expression. In addition to using pencil on paper, he employs various mediums for drawing: ink, charcoal on the wall, even collage, all readily at his disposal. While a form of introductory training, drawing involves a nuanced interplay of intuition, observation, and physical movement. For a skilled artist such as Kentridge, drawing manifests itself as a sense of spirit that fuses with his thinking process.
An extension of Kentridge’s recurring motifs from a vase of flowers, trees, to collage, “To the Drawing Board” invites adepts and dabblers to draw as they come, and enjoy a time of quiet immersed in focus and freedom privileged by the act of drawing.
