FOREWORD

Since its restructuring in 2001, the "Taipei Art Awards" continues to encourage contemporary art that is unique and represents the zeitgeist of the times, and based on this fundamental ethos, resources and platform to showcase creative work have been continuously provided with the objective of fostering talents. In the last two years, the exhibition period of the awards has been purposely arranged to coincide with the "Taipei Biennial" and "Taipei Dangdai," in order to attract more international experts and to increase the "Taipei Art Awards' " international visibility.

In addition to offering the awards' first prize winner a chance to present a solo exhibition, international monitors have also been invited since 2019 to partake in the final selection process of the "Taipei Art Awards," where their experiences and viewpoints are shared. It is anticipated for horizons to be broadened and for more international exhibitions and exchanges to be made possible, with more active elements incorporated in our art ecosystem. Overcoming restrictions caused by the pandemic this year, we've invited Olivia Anani, an independent curator from France, Ron Hanson and Mark Hanson, editor and art director of the art magazine, White Fungus, to serve as this year's international monitors. The intention is for interactions to be facilitated between different professional art circles and to continue to increase the awards' active participation in the international art community.

The 13 artworks selected this year consist of diverse and unique styles, with matured and consistent techniques demonstrated. Amongst which, different vibrant approaches are observed with the video works, and the ways that they deal with local and global issues through unique perspectives and methods are especially memorable. Moreover, close to half of the artworks are comprised of live or documentarybased works of performance art, music, and dance, which shows contemporary art's recent emphasis on "performativity". This trend challenges an artist's scenario-building abilities and invites the audience to engage and communicate, which leads to the opening up of multi-perceptual experiences, discussions, and reflections.

The "Taipei Art Awards" enters into another decade in the year 2020, and in order to build a brand awareness that shapes and sparks development in the overall art community, our museum has designed a distinctive visual image for the "Taipei Art Awards". The design shows the opening up of the white box building and the ubiquitous opto-electronic environment, and it symbolizes the keen zeitgeist responses, the support provided to artists, and the broadening of art's multidimensions that the "Taipei Art Awards" strives to accomplish.
