The Art of Mortal Apparatus: Hsin-Chien Huang Solo Exhibition

Apparatus, a mechanical strategy for defense used in ancient war fields. Artist Hsin-Chien Huang integrates beauty into technology in the combination of concurrent digital technology and complex mechanical concepts. It puts every single thing in this world into a whole new mechanical construction to create an interesting and poetic realm. He uses organs like eyes, lips, nose, and ears to create an interactive apparatus that’s like a sculpture as well as a huge video game. These apparatuses of different kinds will produce sound and graphs following the audience’s responses. For instance, “Read My Lips”, which means “read sounds by eyes”, the lips speak different parts of the body in English when the audience presses a random button on the typewriter. Then the eye apparatus is activated, and produces blinks of visions that vary from the original meaning. Hsin-Chien Huang discusses the absurdity of miscommunication by visions and meanings between human and machines using these delicate digital apparatuses.
