Surrealism is an important contemporary art in the twentieth century. It originates from the conflicts between reality and dream. Artists release their primitive impulses and, with irrational thoughts accompanied with sub-consciousness and rebellious spirits, pursue the strange visions lying beneath the objective reality. Contradictions entangled between reality and dream will evolve to become absolute reality.
Rendering the phenomenal world with a kind of mysterious poesy, surrealism attempts to explore and reveal an artistic conception that is more realistic than the realistic world behind the reality. Such artistic conception can be extended to the bottom of all facts and remodels the human world from a psychological perspective: that is, to recover mythology, fable and metaphor. Since 1945 till today, some artists in Taiwan have been influenced by surrealist art and have developed and derived volatile surrealist languages in every generation with different cultural background. This museum’s holding of the “Surrealist Art Exhibition in Taiwan” seeks to probe into the profound and multicultural pictorial thoughts. The exhibition is expected to invite some tens of artists with up to a hundred brilliant surrealist works for an abundant visual presentation.
