Into the New Millennium: Art and Culture in Chicago
Chicago has made a very large splash on the world scene recently. With the opening of Millennium Park in 2004, and all the preparations that led up to it, this city on Lake Michigan is currently on top of its game in arts and cultural programming. It is now reaping the rewards of the "Bilbao Effect" of its Frank Gehry-designed Pritzker Pavillion and adjacent pedestrian bridge. Adding to all the excitement downtown is a world-class collection of public art, with a program that also reaches into the neighborhoods of this diverse American metropolis. Chicago is literally a city re-inventing itself by continually strengthening its commitment to the arts and the artists who call it home. As a result, its tourism draw seems to be ever on the rise while the quality of life in this beautiful city improves with its constant architectural growth and innovation. Knight's emphasis will be the visual arts that have put Chicago on the map for generations, with the city's many contributions to culture in the last century continuing strongly into the 21st Century.
