Life is lived along lines — Poetry × Body Workshop (August 15 & 22)
Olafur Eliasson: Your curious journey
In this workshop, poet Frida, WU Yu-Hsuan will guide you through improvised writing and movement.
Taking inspiration from Olafur Eliasson’s Life is lived along lines, we will practice trusting the lines of life as they emerge, and attempt to express what we see, experience, love, and lose.
We will play like children—colliding, creating our own language, falling in love indiscriminately with everything.
Facilitator|Wu Yu-Hsuan
Graduate of the MFA Creative Writing Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Wu Yu-Hsuan has twice traveled to Japan to participate in Butoh workshops led by Kazuo Ohno.
She has performed poetry and Butoh at Engaku-ji Temple in Kamakura, Japan; Dia Beacon Contemporary Art Museum in New York; and La Porte Peinte Artist Residency in France.
Her works include the poetry collections Exchanging a Lover’s Rib and Twilight Scorched Fields, and prose collections Decaying Anywhere: 99 Love Letters from a Film Buff, Shapeless — Notes from the Santa Fe Residency, Carrying Home Along, and In Love: Letters Crossing Borders, among others.
She travels the world, exploring the body of poetry and the poetry of the body.
A Preface from the Facilitator
What is poetry?
Poets tell us that our bodily senses are the receivers of poetry; and the Icelandic/Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, through his work, reminds us that the senses are also the expression of poetry.
If you are willing to open your heart and let experience cross the line of daily life, you may find yourself close to the very lines of life.
When you engage with Eliasson’s work through your body—turning your head, shoulders, elbows, chest…—you are not only responding to the waves stirred by art but also discovering the mysterious poetry deep in your own life.
Come, let’s explore the poetry of the body together.
***We recommend participants set aside time beforehand to view the exhibition works in the gallery.
