Abstract Art for Kids Art Experience Workshop

Art is how we perceive and express our world view, and children have the same ability to develop their very own aesthetics. Abstract art has a system by itself, through which the artist tries to express the concept or philosophy with colors, lines and shapes. Its feature lies in the fact that abstract art is neither related nor restricted to the reality of the objective world; rather, it is simply the result of the artist’s inner desire to create.

There are three steps for children to understand abstract art. First, children have to shift their focus from the perception of sensory experience to the awareness of inner imagination. Second, they have to create their own conceptual image with the help of inner imagination. Third, they then need to start from their conceptual image and explicitly express it through abstract art. In other words, the purpose of such activity is not simply expecting children to appreciate the highly creative abstract arts from artists; on top of that, they are expected to physically practice and experience the process of creation to elevate their own aesthetic tastes.

We invite Hsu, Yung-Kang, the Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Education, National Chengchi University and the Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Taipei, to host this workshop, where he will engage parents and children alike in guided reading of the featuring picture book as well as simple hands-on activities to lead them into the world of points, lines and planes.
