Sculpting in Motion: A Creative Experience for All Ages Art Experience

Suppose that a space is a kind of container. How do we walk around in it, move, encounter one another? When we move, how does our line of vision shift among people and objects and spaces?

The history of contemporary sculpture centers on the relationship between viewing and being viewed. When the sculpture “stepped down from its pedestal,” it opened up the possibility for more equal and open forms of interaction, and it inspired many artists to explore the relationship between the beholder and the work:

What if the viewer is also the creator? What if the creator is also the artwork? What if the artwork on display constantly changes? What if minimal materials are used in a simple environment? What if the act of creating turns concepts on their heads?

As artists began to contemplate and explore these questions, they set in motion the history of modern and contemporary sculpture. In the container that is Space 209, every string and wood block you see is a line of thought, and a memory tracing the movements of people’s bodies. You are invited to experience sculpting space. Become a creator, a collaborator, a performer, a beholder. Encounter a time of creativity.
