Measuring Institution Performance

“Apart from treating it as a white box for exhibition and collection, how else can I relate to this site endowed with political meaning?”

German art historian and theorist Hans Belting once asked “whether we could expand the meaning of exhibitions or enrich their dimensions, that is, dimensions that are not yet provided or tolerated by the present concepts of museums”. How should an artist handle his relationship with institutions? What can I do outside the opening hours of the museum? After an artist’s work enters an art institution and its collection, does it mean that he/she cross over creative live, enter the economic and social mechanism constructed by art history? Through this work, I want to physically intervene in the museum mechanism. During the exhibition period, I will live and work in the exhibition venue, pose questions about the relationships between the art institution, the exhibition mechanism and the artist.

For me, this is a work that is completed together with the institution, and a symbol of subverting the mechanisms. It intervenes in the mechanism and art production, and is a survey of and a journey through the institution. The acting experience of living in the exhibition venue will impact on the relations between the artist, the institution and the museum mechanism. With the repetitive bodily experiences breaking with convention, the boundaries between “artistic production” and the “museum exhibiting mechanism” become gradually blurred. The conventions of time and space are flouted and given new meanings. Employing rebellion and integration as strategies of artistic production, the artist’s body/action and an institutionalized artistic career become means of intervention.
