Taipei Fine Arts Museum as the first modern/contemporary museum in Taiwan has featured works of selected artists from Southeast Asia in some of its exhibitions. However, it was still unable to systematically introduce the art history of the region. In light of this, TFAM’s quarterly publication Modern Art opened its international column in 2014 to introduce the development of modern/contemporary art of one Southeast Asia nation in each issue. As of today, development histories of half a dozen nations have been covered by the column. Their similarities with the modern/contemporary art in Taiwan are identifiable and yet distinctively different from nation to nation.
For this conference, scholars and curators from around the world who are specialists in the modern visual art development of the Southeast Asian region and Taiwan were invited to deliver lectures. The main goal of the conference is to understand more deeply the unique aspects of art development in the countries of the region, and explore similarities and differences among these countries through comparative study.
This forum is held over two days with the first day focusing on the exploration and comparison of modern/contemporary art between Southeast Asian nations. The topic for the second day is modernity and postcolonial manifestation of modern art in Taiwan, including how the artists in Taiwan embrace Southeast Asian art and began their exchanges.
