Lee Mingwei and His Relations Curators Talk

Over the past decade, “participatory art” has enjoyed recognition and tremendous growth, actively involving visitors in artworks. At the same time, artists have commonly begun to leave the confines of the art museum to engage in community projects in city spaces. During his 20-year artistic career, Lee Mingwei has often been discussed within the context of participatory art. Beginning May 31, Taipei Fine Arts Museum presents the first large-scale solo exhibition of Lee Mingwei’s works, a thematic exhibition centered on “connections” and “relations.” In this lecture, exhibition curator Mami Kataoka will speak on the history of participatory art, looking at the various dimensions of audience participation. Also, by uncovering the relationship between Zen and participatory art, she will trace its referential perspectives back to traditional Eastern philosophy and premodern views of nature. Finally, by examining the ways in which the artist Lee Mingwei expresses personal family history in exhibition spaces, Kataoka will consider the relations between nations that occur outside grand official histories, as they are revealed through individual narratives.
