What exactly is an "object"? Due to the impact of the industrial revolution, ever since the 19th century the material objects surrounding people have far surpassed the minimum amount each person needs for everyday life. Objects no longer serve to simply maintain the basic needs of existence, but participate in giving meaning to our daily lives. They even interject themselves into the process of building individual self-identities. Exactly how has the use of objects and the meaning of objects in works of art changed along with the historical shifts in the structure of everyday life? What different roles have objects played in art history? In the present digital age, do objects take on new forms that differ from the past? All these questions will be the subjects explored in this lecture.
Wang Po-Wei is an art critic. His principal fields of research are media theory, contemporary art history, sociology of culture and art, and art/science/technology (AST). He currently serves as a researcher at the Digital Art Center, Taipei.
