Secret Life of Image: from Gourd to Monster and Back Again

Introduction
Taipei Biennial 2012 revealed a vast range of images of almost all categories in our intellectual and sensible life, from science, art to economy, politics, mythology and etc. At the closing of the Biennial, Chihiro’s lecture will be a reading of this truly original exhibition which is in the intersection of anthropology of image, modern history and technology. Gourd Museum, one of the mini-museums of the Taipei Biennial 2012, attempts to open up and continue the creative dialogue of the Biennial. The monster of history will re-generate the cycle of secret life of image.

Chihiro Minato is a renowned Japanese photographer based in Tokyo where he has served as a professor at Tama Art University since 1995. After receiving the Gasei Scholarship from Argentina in 1982, Minato spent several years traveling in South America until he settled in Paris and became established as a photographer and critic. Minato has authored numerous books and participated in exhibitions extensively. In 2007, he served as the commissioner of the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
