May 18 – International Museum Day
In 1977, the International Council of Museums first declared May 18 to be International Museum Day, and it has now entered its 35th year of celebration. Initially, this day was meant to encourage the public to learn more about where museums come from and the role they play in contemporary society. Today, it has evolved into a gala celebration of culture in which 30,000 museums in over 120 countries take part.
On this day, museums round the world hold hundreds of events, in an effort to forge closer connections with people.
We Want to Get Closer to You
As a member of the world museum community, Taipei Fine Arts Museum has not forgotten to take time on this day to ponder: How can we get closer to our guests?
After thoughtful consideration, we arrived at an answer: By opening our doors wide, and faithfully presenting the scenes of work that take place right here in the museum, about which most people know very little. We hope this will allow our visitors to gain a new understanding of who we are and what we do.
This is how the “Open Museum” event was born.
OPEN Museum
Here we present the operational statistics that we access every day before opening the museum doors and welcoming visitors.
These figures make plain the work we do every day. These figures form a bridge that connects us to you, and on this day they remind us of our prime objective – to continually reveal the mysteries of one artwork after another within the museum’s spaces, to create one beautiful viewing experience after another that our visitors may claim as their own.
These numbers have been built up through all of your visits. These numbers form a bond between you and us, allowing the relationship between the public and the museum to attain greater intimacy through close communication.
Free admission on May 18.
