Ryuichi Sakamoto was an internationally renowned musician. Yet his creations were not limited to music. He crossed the boundaries of media, encompassing sounds, images, lighting and technology to expand the possibilities of contemporary sound. Through “installation music,” he transformed music into a three-dimensional experience that could be “seen” and “sensed” within a space. Offering a new way to perceive and listen to the world, Sakamoto engaged in a profound exploration of art, technology and social issues.
This kind of artistic practice was not meant to pursue novelty of form for its own sake, but arose from an inquiry into the essence of things, a continual contemplation of the interrelationships among sound, time, space, and people. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s worldview therefore stands at the core of this Public Program, which aims to lead participants to a comprehension of how he developed his creative philosophy in different artistic and cultural milieus, and how this relates to the works in the exhibition. In the Public Talk, the curator and artists will share their curatorial and creative concepts, providing the Taiwanese public with a direct path to understanding the exhibition. Meanwhile, “Sound Box” is an interactive sound system that emphasizes intuition and participation, through a series of interactive experiences in which visitors sense the relationships among time, space and sound, while enjoying the delights of creating. “Cinematic Soundscape” is a series of screenings and talks, exploring the background of Sakamoto’s thought in the areas of film and culture. These three Public Program segments offer visitors three different pathways of understanding: creative philosophy, sensory experience, and thought context.
