  • Born in Beijing, Chen Chi-kwan graduated from the architecture department of Szechuan Central University in 1944, but was extremely interested in painting. He went to the United States in 1945, receiving a master's degree in architecture from the University of Illinois, and afterward studying design and painting at UCLA. During his years of study abroad, Chen absorbed the finest aspects of Western art. For example, he studied the techniques by which Impressionist Claude Monet captured the allure of light with colors in his paintings of churches. He particularly admired Italian Futurist Umberto Boccioni's work “Development of a Bottle in Space,” which adopted multiple points of observation, as well as the abstruse worlds of the Surrealists.
