HAN Hsiang-ning

Han Hsiang-ning was born in 1939 in Chongqing, China. He graduated from the Art Department of National Taiwan Normal University in 1960, and joined the Fifth Moon Group in the same year. He moved to New York in 1967, where he was influenced by Minimalist and Pop Art and started using an airbrush for his paintings. Using photos as reference, he employs a pointillist technique in his New York City street scenes to create particles floating in the air. The result is a fog-like effect that bathes the entire scene in shades of gray. His 1970 solo exhibition Extreme Light included a room completely airbrushed with extremely pale-colored specks. Later he made Pop Art inspired paintings of New York cityscapes and scenes of factories around the New York area. Starting from Photorealism, Han has developed his own unique style painting.
