Ryuichi Sakamoto︱seeing sound, hearing time: Unlocking the Boundaries of Perception Through Sound, Space, and Image

Curated by Japanese curator Sachiko NAMBA, Ryuichi Sakamoto︱seeing sound, hearing time examines the extensive, diverse interdisciplinary artistic practices of Ryuichi SAKAMOTO (1952–2023) since 2000. The exhibition explores his integration of sound, moving images, digital technologies, and the physical environment, opening a new realm for contemporary perceptual experience. It also highlights Sakamoto’s interdisciplinary collaborations with artists such as Shiro TAKATANI, Daito MANABE, Carsten NICOLAI, Apichatpong WEERASETHAKUL, and Zakkubalan.

SAKAMOTO’s career centered on exploring how music can transcend auditory experience to become a tangible, spatially perceptible art form. The exhibition focuses on his work that blends natural and technological media like water, fog, meteorological data, and electromagnetic waves, showcasing his consistent exploration of the borders of human perception and the idea of “Installation Music.” Expanding from sound into visual and spatial realms, his practice blurs the boundaries between music and visual culture. It invites visitors to engage their senses with an exhibition space shaped by sound and imagery, prompting them to reconsider how we listen to and perceive the world.

To ensure the best viewing experience, admission requires an online reservation, and a limited number of standby tickets are issued on-site. The first round of reservations opens at 10:00 a.m. on October 15 for visits from October 31 to November 29. For comprehensive ticketing rules and visitor guidelines, please visit TFAM’s official website.

" Entanglements: The Rhythm of Being" Exhibition Catalogue

The catalogue for Entanglements: The Rhythm of Being offers a comprehensive record of works by eleven artists and art collectives. From the human and the non-human to senses and space-time, and to mutualistic symbiosis, it broadens ideas about sharing, mutual aid, and coexistence. Beginning with the geological “critical zone” and the quantum physics concept of “entanglement,” the exhibition reflects on the continually evolving relationships among humans, animals, land, microorganisms, technology, and the environment.

The catalogue’s design and binding reflect the exhibition’s spatial layout and the artworks’ forms, featuring an exposed lay-flat binding, unique gatefolds, and removable pages that extend the visual experience of the artworks. Selected poetic excerpts from the artworks are also made into flipbooks, making reading an experience of participation. More than a simple documentation of the exhibition, this catalogue serves as a continuously evolving record of the exhibition’s perceptual experience.
