  • Born in Taoyuan County, Taiwan, Huang Yung-sung graduated from the National Taiwan Academy of Arts in 1966. In the same year he took part in the “Modern Poetry Exhibition” along with Huang Hua-chen, Chang Chao-tang, Lung Se-liang and others, showing their works outdoors in Taipei’s Ximen District and on the campus of National Taiwan University. In 1967, when studying at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts, he joined with other young artists intent on breaking away from tradition, such as Wang Ying-de, Xi Song and Yao Meng-jia, in organizing the three-part “UP” painting exhibition, held separately at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and the National Taiwan Arts Hall. In 1973 he joined the Group Visual-10, dedicated to photographic art. In 1971 he founded the English edition of Echo Magazine to encourage exchange between Eastern and Western cultures. The Chinese-language edition was published in 1976. Starting in 1987, he worked to establish a gene bank for the preservation of traditional Chinese popular culture.
