  • Li Mei-shu was born into a wealthy family in Sanhsia, Taipei County. In 1918 he entered the Teacher Training Department at Taipei Normal College, which was when his contact with art began. Before graduating Li received instruction from Ishikawa Kin'ichiro at the Summer Vacation Art Camp, along Chen Chih-chi, Li Shih-chiao and Li Tse-fan. In 1928, Li persuaded his family to allow him to travel to Japan, where he gained entry to Tokyo Art School a year later. During his studies there, he was taught by Okada Saburosuke, which helped lay a solid foundation for his developing a realistic style.
